Investiture of President Gregory Haile: Kindness Accentuates Introduction to Campus
After catching her breath, Naylet Leon offered apologies to her colleagues from Arts, Humanities, Communication & Design who had gathered earlier this year for a Pathways meeting on Central Campus. She would have been later had a “nice gentleman,” sensing the English professor was in a hurry, not decided to pull out in deference to give her the closest available parking space near the Institute of Public Safety building.
Small Gestures Go a Long Way
“It’s the little things,” said Trish Joyce, assistant professor English, recalling the simple gesture by Gregory Haile to give up his parking spot before he would enter the same lecture hall to address Leon and the other faculty and staff in attendance.
Joyce doesn’t expect another parking lot encounter, but she wouldn’t be surprised to walk away with more lasting impressions of Gregory Adam Haile, Esq, when she takes part in his investiture as the seventh President of Broward College, Friday, March 29, 2019, 3 p.m., in Bailey Hall on the A. Hugh Adams Central Campus in Davie.
Although President Haile, the former counsel and vice president for Public Policy and Government Affairs at Broward College, assumed his new responsibilities last summer, the investiture will officially mark the transference of his authority. But Joyce said that hasn’t stopped the new president from making his presence felt either on campus or within the surrounding communities.
Fits Right In
“He just put his hands in the soil and mixed right in,” said Joyce, who, along with the incoming president, volunteered to plant flowers, paint, and renovate the parking lot at Pinewood Elementary last month in North Lauderdale.
Now in her fourth decade at Broward College teaching students to write creatively and voice their opinions, Joyce is equally impressed with President’s Haile ability to motivate and reach out to the disconnected.
“He’s fantastic at telling stories to hold an audience’s attention,” said Joyce. “And he always brings his message back to celebrate our students. He never loses sight of why we are all here.”
A Ceremony For All to Attend
Joyce said she is honored to take part in the investiture and encourages all students, faculty, and staff to join her in support of President Haile when he presents his vision for Broward College. For those who cannot attend, the investiture will also be streamed live. Investiture festivities conclude with an outdoor reception immediately following the official launch of President Haile’s tenure.
In addition to the formal installation ceremony, a series of events marking his new era at Broward College featured a barbecue for students, faculty, and staff with the new president this week.
Earlier in February, students enjoyed “A Night at the Movies” with the new president and a favorite film of his, “Men of Honor,” starring Cuba Gooding, Jr., and Robert De Niro.

MLK Day of Service Makes an Impact on the Community
Broward College is committed to serving the community. The College’s annual initiative to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. continues to help the local community and inspire people to volunteer their time to improve the lives of others. Over the past five years, Broward College, in partnership with the MLK Day of Service Advisory Board, has awarded $1,089,500 in grant funding from the Florida Legislature for 185 projects and over 13,753 volunteers have logged 66,809 hours.
Giving back to Broward County
The MLK Day of Service funds different projects from education to support for veterans. During the 2019 MLK Day of Service, projects also included neighborhood improvement, health promotion, the environment, disaster preparedness, and public safety.
In 2019, the College awarded $200,000 to 47 community organizations, out of 106 applications received. 3,710 volunteers, a 21 percent increase from 2018, contributed a total of 18,592 hours across 27 municipalities. These projects served a total of 29,500 K-12 and college students and 5,044 veterans.
During the MLK Day of Service, Broward College’s faculty, staff and students worked alongside community members in projects that exemplify the College’s motto of ‘Together We Serve.’
Making an impact
Broward College faculty, staff, and students are essential to the projects carried during the MLK Day of Service. Out of 47 community projects, three were led by faculty, staff, and students. They work tirelessly to make a profound impact on the communities they serve.
The City of North Lauderdale recognized Lulrick Balzora, Dean of Academic Affairs for the Social Behavioral Sciences & Human Services pathway, along with several other College’s faculty and employees on Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2019 for their efforts to beautify the campus of Pinewood Elementary. During the three-day project, Balzora and his team painted the school’s exterior and did some landscape work.
“This recognition by the City of North Lauderdale confirms the appreciation for the relationship we built by helping and volunteering at the school. And it also assures that it’s not just a one-day thing, but rather a long-term commitment to the city and the community,” says Balzora. In addition to the campus improvement project, Balzora’s students will provide tutoring for Pinewood Elementary students during the semester.
“The biggest takeaway we have from MLK Day is that giving back is important all year round. It inspires us to make volunteering a part of our lives,” says Balzora.
Recognizing the value of service
On March 1, 2019, the College hosted an awards ceremony to honor all the participating organizations for their efforts and service to the community. YMCA of South Florida was recognized for having the most volunteers registered and the most hours logged.

TEDxBrowardCollege is coming back for a second edition
After a successful first run in the fall of 2017, Broward College has been licensed once again by TED to host a second TEDxBrowardCollege. TED is a nonprofit devoted to spreading ideas, usually in the form of short talks. TEDx is local, independently organized events that follow certain rules and regulations from the TED Conference, which provides general guidance.
TEDxBrowardCollege will take place on Friday, March 15, 2019, at the Performing and Cultural Arts Theater (PCAT) located on Building 68 of the Judson A. Samuels South Campus.
The invitation-only event is set to start at 4:00 p.m. and will run until 7:00 p.m. It will be divided into two sessions of four speakers each.
Speakers
Speakers were selected based on an application process that tested their abstract and sample speech. An internal committee of faculty and staff chaired by assistant professor of Communication Walter Burton reviewed the applications.
Technology and its Impact in the Operating Room (Dr. John Malloy)
As a renowned name in spinal surgery, Dr. John Malloy will focus his talk on new technologies and techniques in spinal surgeries that treat musculoskeletal and spinal injuries and disorders.
As a published author and national and international speaker, he has influenced surgeons from all over the world.
Innovate What’s in Your Way (Natalie Butto)
Natalie Butto is currently a management professor at Broward College. She has previously worked as a Fortune 500 in-house legal counsel and executive. Her presentation will focus on how to turn problems or obstacles into fuel for creativity, innovation, and entrepreneurship.
Task Oriented Workforce (Chris Palermo)
Today’s working environment differs greatly from 30 or 40 years ago. Chris Palermo, founder, and CEO of Global Communication Networks (GCN) will be talking about how people must prepare and what to expect from today’s competitive and demanding workforce.
We Need More Boundaries, Less Walls (Kai Zwiebel)
Kai Zwiebel will focus on the benefits of individuals creating boundaries and how it affects humanity on a larger scale. Zwiebel is graduating in May of 2019 with her Associate of Arts and plans to pursue a Doctorate in Anthropology.
Culture Trumps Strategy and Goals Every Time (Mark Alfieri)
Mark Alfieri is the CEO of BrandStar, a full-service content marketing agency. He will be talking about the influence of the day-to-day work environment in business success.
The Strides in Debate (Joseph Loffredo)
Joseph Loffredo is a debate competitor for Cooper City High School and Broward College. He will discuss how debate influences future citizens and how debate helped him to find his voice. Loffredo was the champion speaker in Lincoln Douglas Debate and 3rd place at the Florida College System Activities Association State Forensics Tournament in Parliamentary Debate.
The Dropped Baton (Brandon Gibson)
Brandon Gibson will address entrepreneurship, how to approach it, and how to be a successful entrepreneur. Given his experience as Club President for Greatness in the Making (G.I.M.), a Broward College initiative with the mission to assist students in assimilating into today’s workforce in a fun and interactive setting, Gibson will have plenty of stories to share.
Social Justice Parenting (Traci Baxley)
Traci Baxley is using her TED talk to discuss new ideas in parenting styles that adapt to our current social climate. These styles can offer advantages by turning fear into motivations and fueling positive change. Baxley is the founder and CEO of BrownSchooling, a consulting company that offers professional development in equity practices for schools and organizations.

Investiture of BC President Haile: Pomp, Circumstance – and Party
Planning a party can be exciting and fun but coordinating an event that is both celebration and solemn can be a daunting challenge all its own.
“It’s all-hands-on-deck,” said Ellice Martinez, associate vice president for Community Partnerships and Institutional Events who is part of a team coordinating the investiture of Gregory Adam Haile, Esq., as the seventh President of Broward College on Friday, March 29, 2019, 3 p.m., in Bailey Hall on the A. Hugh Adams Central Campus in Davie. “Everyone is so excited! We have an amazing committee of organizers made up of faculty and staff representing so many different departments,” she explained as she outlined the tasks that the team has been working on for months.
The investiture committee is charged with planning the program, organizing speakers, venue catering, entertaining, accommodating and assuring the comfort of some 800 elected officials and community leaders who will join faculty, students and staff for the ceremony. After all, it’s not every day that Broward College hosts an investiture, the last was in 2004 when Larry A. Cauldron was installed as the fifth president of the College.
“The difficulty in planning a celebration like this involves educating the public on the historical aspects and significance of the event,” said Martinez. “Of course, the event is about President Haile and what he represents, but it’s also a time to laud the history and accomplishments of Broward College.”
So, just what is an investiture? Simply put, it’s the “formal ceremony of conferring the authority and symbols of high office” is among the oldest traditions in academia with origins dating back to “highly dignified knighthood ceremonies” in medieval times.
Although President Haile, the former counsel and vice president for Public Policy and Government Affairs at Broward College, assumed his new responsibilities in the summer, the investiture will officially mark the transference of his authority. The ceremony, scheduled for no more than two hours and to be streamed live, will include an academic procession in which participants are encouraged to wear the regalia of their college or university.
In addition to the formal installation ceremony, the excitement behind the inauguration will also be conveyed at the investiture kick-off, featuring a barbecue for students, faculty and staff with the new president, Wednesday, March 27, 2019, 11 a.m.-2 p.m., outdoors on North Campus. Investiture festivities conclude with an outdoor reception – requiring a 50’x 250 party tent including two air conditioning units to accommodate some 700 guests -- immediately following the official launch of President Haile’s tenure. Earlier in February, Broward College students enjoyed “A Night at the Movies” with the new president and a favorite film of his, “Men of Honor,” starring Cuba Gooding, Jr., and Robert De Niro.

Broward College Receives Top Honor for International Education Program
The Institute of International Education (IIE) honored Broward College with the top award in the category of International Partnerships during the 2019 IIE Heiskell Awards. President Gregory Adam Haile, Esq. and Dr. David Moore received the honor at the IIE 2019 Summit in New York on Feb. 17.
The College was recognized for its initiative ‘The Third Way’ which allows students to stay in their home country while completing an associate degree with Broward College. Credits earned during the program show on a Broward College transcript and students who complete the program can transfer to a college or university in the U.S. to complete the last two years towards a bachelor’s degree.
"For more than four decades, Broward College has been a leader in international education, partnering with colleges and universities throughout the world to provide a more accessible way to attract international students," said President Haile.
Heiskell Awards
The IIE Andrew Heiskell Awards were created in 2001 to honor the most innovative and successful models that promote study abroad, international partnerships and the internationalization of campuses. They were named in memory of Andrew Heiskell, a long-time member of the Executive Committee of IIE’s Board of Trustees and a former chairman of Time Inc. Heiskell was a committed advocate for international education.
Awards are given in five categories: Scholars as Drivers of Innovation, Student Mobility, International Partnerships, Access and Equity, and Higher Education in Emergencies.
International Partnerships
Broward College has offered ‘The Third Way’ initiative since 1979. More than 8,600 students have since transferred to a U.S. institution after completing the program. Broward College currently has international centers or academic partners in Bolivia, Brazil, China, Ecuador, India, Indonesia, Kuwait, Peru, Spain, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, and Singapore.
International Centers offer academic programs approved by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Schools and Colleges (SACS). The courses are offered in English, facilitated by local faculty accredited by SACS, and follow the same course numbers, titles, descriptions, and student learning outcomes as the students follow in Florida.
Academic affiliates, on the other hand, are institutions outside of the U.S. that offer a portion of the curriculum but SACS does not approve their programs. However, courses are taught in English and faculty must be accredited by SACS and approved by Broward College.
