New application technologies have transformed nearly every aspect of our lives. Whether we’re ordering food, a ride, or communicating with friends, there’s an app for that. The growing demand for applications and technologies among businesses around the globe are giving rise to growth in opportunities in the field of Information Technology/Computer Science.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Information Technology is one of the fastest growing fields in the national economy. Employment in computer and information technology occupations is projected to grow by 13 percent from 2016 to 2026, faster than the average for all occupations. The latest data from the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity statistics show the same trend in Broward County. Read more at Career Source Broward.

To meet this growth, Broward College now offers two new Bachelor of Applied Science (BAS) programs. The curricula are designed to ensure graduates of the programs exceed industry demands and expectations of employers.

Choose your area of specialization

BC studentThe degrees offered are BAS in Technology Management with specializations in Tech Management or Big Data, and BAS in Information Technology with specializations in Project Management, Cyber Network Security, Cisco Networking, Microsoft Networking, and Web Development. Graduates will receive the BAS and an advanced technical certification indicating their area of specialization.

While working towards their degree, students will earn technical certificates ordered by the state and industry certifications such as Network Plus, Project Plus, and more.

“These technical certifications are what really makes these degrees more valuable than even some of our university competitors that offer similar programs,” explains Annie Myers, associate dean of Information Technology at Broward College. “Most of the costs for technical certifications are paid for by the College.”

Why choose Broward College?

In addition to the advantage of obtaining most technical certifications for free, students also enjoy flexibility when it comes to scheduling classes. Courses for the degrees are available day and night, giving the opportunity to professionals who are currently employed. Two of the specializations – cybersecurity and project management – can be completed fully online.

“I would really recommend Broward College because the teachers here are great. They are people with experience in the industry that know what employers are looking for so they prepare you for it,” says Erika Hudson, who will graduate with her BAS in Technology Management and an advanced technical certification in Big Data this December.

Hudson, a 37-year old mother, also enjoys the flexibility of taking night classes, which allows her to work full-time at the College to support her daughter.

“Especially with the online classes, I had a previous bad experience at another institution. At Broward College, the online classes I’ve taken have been great, the professors very responsive and helpful.”

From coding to hackathons, the IT specializations at Broward College also offers workshops to help students gain qualifications and expertise in their desired fields.

With the variety of degrees offered, outstanding faculty, and the free technical certifications embedded within the programs, Broward College stands out among other colleges and universities in South Florida for pursuing an IT specialization.
