Bayna Parrilla has been through his fair share of heartbreak early on in life. He lost his mother to cancer at age seven and father in a motorcycle accident less than two years later. Despite the tragedies, Parrilla has strived to persevere as a way to honor their memory. As a recent graduate from Miramar High and a new college student at Broward College in the fall, he is surely making his parents’ memory proud with the help of a new scholarship program.

Thanks to grant funding from the Get REAL! (Ready for Education And Learning) program, Broward College is able provide Parilla with the opportunity to develop life and career skills leading to meaningful employment.

Parrilla, whose aunt served as guardian after his parents died, is grateful to have the program assistance.

“It will make a great impact,” he said. “I am thankful to have this opportunity starting out, as it will make things a lot easier.”

Parrilla doesn’t have a car at the moment, and will be given bus passes to and from South Campus in Pembroke Pines, FL. The program also is helping out with other expenses not covered by the federal Pell Grant, including work attire. This ensures Parrilla will be dressed for success as he begins his journey on the business pathway.

About the Get REAL! Grant

The Get REAL! program will provide 80 students with the opportunity to pursue their academic goals. Participants are recruited based on certain challenging situations including high school drop outs, individuals with disabilities, single parents, returning veterans and LGBT youth. Those between the ages of 17 and 24 contemplating continued education and training will also be considered.

Academic Success Centers (ASC) will provide Get REAL! participants with supplemental instructional resources. The program activities also allow participants to stack and lattice academic competencies and work skills into continuing education. Program achievements will build toward attainment of technical certificates, industry recognized credentials, certifications, and employment and academic degrees. The program also secures employment within a student’s chosen career at Broward College, and provides students with career coaches, employment success coaches and student advisors.

Eligible students will receive:

  • tuition assistance
  • goal-based financial incentives
  • career support and assigned advisors
  • work-study opportunities
  • job placement assistance
