Village Square Dinner 3: A National Identity Crisis Or A Humanitarian Crisis? The Border Debate @ Funky Buddha Brewery
May 29 @ 6:00 pm – 8:30 pm

Village Square Dinner 2: Open/Closed Borders in America

Are we losing our cultural identity? Is immigration the cause? What does being an American mean to us and will it change as we become more diverse?

What are the benefits of a multicultural, diverse and inclusive country? Is fear blinding us to the possibilities and opportunities?

By 2020, Blacks, Hispanics, Asians, American Indians and multiracial individuals will constitute 40% of the U.S. population.

Should we shift the focus and national conversation to how to build bridges and how to learn to live in a country that is less white?

What is the economic impact of a larger immigrant workforce? Does it lead to greater consumption and more jobs or would Closed Borders increase jobs for native-born Americans and save resources. What impact do immigrants – who are twice as likely as US born citizens to start a business – contribute to GDP and job-growth?

Can we afford the expense of dollars flowing out of America from wages earned by immigrants who send money to their home country to support a family? And in how is this outflow (which exceeds our international aid to these countries) contribute to keeping them at home vs coming to the US?

And how do Open Borders stimulate thought and new ideas? Are we truly accepting immigrants as full members of American Society?

Between 2010-2030 – we will lose 15M whites from the labor force and gain 26M racial minorities – and even this growth will not be sufficient. The U.S. will need workers throughout the employment spectrum from unskilled to highly skilled. If not through immigration, how will we continue to retain our innovative edge, grow and prosper?

The Border Debate at Broward College’s Village Square Dinner will look at the intellectual, economic and cultural implications of shutting the door on immigration vs. strategically welcoming new Americans through our borders to pursue their American dream.

  • Private Member/Speaker Reception: 6:00 p.m. – 6:45 p.m.
