6 Ways to Stay Sharp During Spring Break

February 27, 2015 | More Tips

Spring break is an academic tradition that offers students a mid-term vacation from a busy semester. Some students choose to travel but many decide to stay close to home and work or rest. Here are a few ways to make the most of this semester break:

  1. Volunteer

Whether it’s participating in a beach clean-up or walking for a cause, volunteering can be a life changing experience for you and the people you serve. Not only can you learn new things and meet new people, but giving back feels great. Volunteering can also help you build your resume, make contacts, and qualify for scholarships—especially if your volunteer work is directly related to the career you’re pursuing. Pay it forward by volunteering in a cause or organization you believe in.

  1. Read for fun

While the load of textbooks during the semester may make it difficult to pick up a novel and read for fun, spring break offers the perfect opportunity. Pick up a book from our local Broward County libraries and indulge in a great novel.

Reading also exercises your brain and keeps you sharp while taking a break from your studies.

  1. Exercise

Extra time during spring break offers the opportunity to get outside and get active. Why not try something new such as yoga, Cross-Fit or Zumba to make fitness fun? Regular exercise keeps you healthy, helps you focus, maintains energy and improves moods.

Whether you go to a gym, visit a local park, play your favorite sport or pick up a new one, South Florida’s spring breezes set the perfect weather to get out and get in shape.

  1. Learn a New Skill

Have you always wanted to build a bookshelf? What about designing a website or learning to cook? Though a week may not be enough time to master any of these skills, spring break can be a great time to start learning.

Try joining a community course, watch tutorials online or pick up a book. However you choose to develop this new skill, just make sure you remain patient and enjoy the process. Stick with it and the results will be worth it.

  1. Visit the Academic Success Centers

Whether you need assistance with a difficult subject or just want to stay ahead of your studies, the Academic Success Centers at North and South Campus are open during break. Stop by and meet with a tutor or check out our academic learning tools to help you improve your skills.

  1. Take a Break

Though the above activities will help you stay sharp during spring break, simply relaxing can be beneficial as well. After a stress-free, tranquil week, you should be refreshed and ready to finish the semester.

Broward College observes spring break from Monday, March 2nd to Sunday, March 8th 2015. Start making plans for some fun and relaxation.

Now that you six suggestions for spring break, how will you enjoy your week off?
