DECA Team Earns Top Honors in State Competition
The recent State competition at Florida International University marked a milestone for the DECA representatives from Broward College North Campus. The team had its best showing, with each of the 13 team members finishing in the top 10 for their chosen category. This stellar performance earned them all a slot at the International event in Anaheim, Calif. in April, 2017.
The students collected more first, second and third place positions than in any other State competition they’ve participated in. Students entered 13 of the 19 categories where they conducted a case study and/or completed an exam, as well as produced a 15-20 minute presentation. A question-and-answer session followed before a panel of expert judges. The participants were gauged on how they work with one another, understanding of an idea, research and delivery of concepts or plans. Through the intense competition the students came together and put their critical, written and oratory skills to the test.
Among the top performers was Nour Albakry, who finished first in the state for Entrepreneurship-Starting a Business with partner Madison Land. The two gained high praise for their couponing app, titled Eclipse.
Albakry also collaborated with Jason Darrow to win second in the state for international marketing. They put together a marketing plan using the given case study on an American lingerie company that wanted to open 10 stores in Hong Kong. Since it’s a more conservative clientele, their idea was to pick and choose what items to sell. Eight stores would sell the conservative products and the rest would have everything. Their direction also included an online component, joint venture opportunities with an existing company and the use of a celebrity as an endorser.
In all, 279 students from more than 20 chapters participated including Florida State University, University of Florida, Florida Atlantic University, University of Florida, and the host school, Florida International University.
“I am so proud of not only the poise and competitive spirit of our students, but also Broward College North for providing the education and soft skill capability our students have learned from our campus leadership and faculty,” Steven Gross, Broward College faculty and DECA advisor, said.
Other members of the team who competed Steven Baumgard, Joel Tejada, Bernard Durandisse, Noah Annuzzi, Drew Jones, Ashley Bennett, Tyler Dunn, Mariah Leno, Denzil Richards and Yazmin Avila.
