Broward College Promotes Public Safety Through Community Series
With increasing security concerns across the country, Broward College is keen on providing students, faculty and staff the opportunity to learn about local public safety agencies and the services and resources available. In recognition of National Campus Safety Awareness Month, the College hosts Campus Safety Days every Wednesday of September. In its third year, the event rotates between the three main campuses and the Miramar West Center.
The Safety, Security, and Emergency Preparedness Department partners with Student Life, local law enforcement organizations and agencies to offer the series of free community fairs.
“The primary goal of the Campus Safety Day series is to promote safety on and off our campuses while equally connecting our community members to the various safety-related organizations throughout Broward County,” said Jaeson Weber, coordinator for safety, security, and emergency preparedness.
Organizations and agencies involved
More than 20 different public safety agencies participated in this year’s series. Among them Nancy J Cotterman Sexual Assault & Treatment Center, Women in Distress, Davie Police and Fire Departments, Florida Highway Patrol and the U.S. Marine Corps.
This year, vendors expanded their involvement by adding live demonstrations and open recruitment for students. Additionally, this year, the Davie Police Department included a K9 demonstration and interaction with their Mounted Patrol Unit.
Public Safety Pathway
Additionally, Campus Safety Days serve as a medium for law enforcement and public safety agencies to recruit students. The College offers more than 10 different career opportunities in their Public Safety pathway including Criminal Justice Technology, Police Officer, Fire and Emergency Services, and more.
. “The event series affords participants the opportunity to network with professionals and gain a stronger understanding of the demands of the public safety discipline. and learn how the pathway at BC can make these opportunities a reality while equally bestowing upon them the necessary skills, knowledge and abilities to be successful,” said Weber.
